Introducing Etsy Artist Papermockingbird

I would like to introduce our Feature Etsy Artist for the week......Papermockingbird. You can find her beautiful jewelry at http://www.papermockingbird.etsy.com/

1. When did you start crafting?

Well now...I've been making things nearly all my life! I think someone told me I was good at art when I was very young and I somehow beleived them enough to carry on with it! But my serious jewellery-making business started about a year ago when I was unemployed in France and the risk of going hungry pushed me to start making and selling jewellery in local markets. I would set up my little table and sit there freezing whilst trying to make stuff and earn enough at least to pay for the plot... and then when xmas came along I started to get a lot of sales and a few people asked if they could have some of my stuff in their shops! That encouraged me to start my own Etsy shop and learn about promoting myself.

2. What is your favorite crafting tool?

I love re-using things! nearly all my jewellery is made from old and broken or out-dated jewellery and people's old button collections that they dont want anymore.....I take pride in the fact that I rarely buy supplies (apart from the wire thread to hold it all together). So you know that you will almost never find the same beads or buttons on another necklace! It's what helped me build my little business from nothing!! Oh and I would be lost without my trusty pliers!!! They're really old but so sharp and pointy that you can do really intricate stuff with them - I don't think they make them like that anymore!!

3. What do you like to make the best?

I love making necklaces! They take the longest but I really get into it and I'm nearly always pleased with the result. There's something about the symetry of a necklace that can really change someone's look. I often imagine the woman (or man) who would wear it...or what sort of dress it would go with.

4. How did you discover etsy?

A friend of mine told me about it and I just clicked online expecting to find some quaint & humble little site full of grannys selling knitting and jam and (no offense intended grannys).....WOW!!! -I've never looked back! It was as if I discovered a whole other world with thousands of people like me in it! that's part of the attraction - meeting so many other creative people who I would never meet in everyday life and lots of cool grannys too lol. And the selling part is just an added bonus...

5. Tell us about yourself...

Well I'm 29 and I'm from a place called Rochester near London-England. I spend a lot of time in France with my very supportive partner Aymeric and our dog, and I'm studying an Msc in Environmental Architecture in Snowdonia, Wales. So basically I do a lot of travelling around! I'd like oneday to build a beautiful house (or houses) in a French woodland somwhere and turn it into an Artists retreat or something....and have lots of tree houses and ...I'm a real dreamer! I love cycling (& I'm curently designing a fold out bike trailer to sell my jewellery out of and become a real-life "peddler" -as I'm always on the move), and I can get very passionate about food when prompted ;¬)

Featured Etsy Artist/Crafter Fashionfauxpas!

Here is our very first featured Etsy Artist /Crafter Bethany of Fashionfauxpas! You can find her shop here http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5977583&ga_search_query=fashionfauxpas&ga_search_type=seller_usernames Go visit her!

Q. How did you start making crafts?

I started making cards because I was frustrated with the poor choices of mass produced cards. I got so bored of what they had to offer and nothing really stood out for my friends and family. I think it's really important to have something special for a greetings card, and so I started making my own.
Q. How long have you been doing crafts?
I started dabbling in card making about 3 years ago, but it was nothing serious - just foam shapes glued onto cards! I started to discover some really beautiful and fun supplies about a year and a half ago and my cards grew into something much better. Around February of this year I thought I'd really make a go of it and started selling on Etsy.

Q. What is your favorite medium to work with?
I'm a paper person! I'm a bit of fiend when it comes to pretty papers - if something catches my eye then I have to have it and turn it into a card. It means I've always got some ideas of what I want to make - papers are instant inspiration for me!

Q. Tell us a little bit about you, your family, your hobbies?
I'm 21 years old - turn 22 next month - and I currently live in Edinburgh, Scotland. I graduate next month with an MA in philosophy and English literature. I'm currently looking for a job to help pay for the Masters I'm doing after the summer in Creative Writing. But everyone knows that the job market isn't so hot right now so I've got to concentrate on my craft as much as possible - sometimes it literally does put the bread on the table! When I'm not making cards I'm usually writing some description of short story. I also like going to see my favourite bands live, I like really bad horror movies, all things kawaii, I have an obsession with Japan, Thomas Hardy, Hello Kitty and Miffy. I'm a fan of good comedy - Flight of the Conchords, Black Books etc. And I enjoy a good cup of hot tea with some chocolate biscuits; such a treat! And I suppose that's all there is to say!

feature days

Well this week I will be starting a few new things on my blog. I want to start featuring etsy artists/crafters on here atleast one day a week. I will choose atleast one person to feature and have a little Bio on them then I will have some photos of their etsy items and a link to their shop. If you are on etsy and would like to be featured please leave a comment.
I also want to do some give aways so I need some volunteers to donate an item to be given away. I will host the giveaway and then send you the winner's contact info in order for you to send them thier prize. What a wonderful way to get more exposure to your site/etsy shop. I of course have them listed on etsy, http://www.sweetdesigninc.etsy.com/ I am feeling creative today so no telling how many cards I might complete and list today. Two new cards using dry embossing

Well I had a real good time doing these two cards. They are dry embossed, each dragonfly and heart done by hand using a stencil and a light box that I made. I think they turned out fantastic! I love my light box too and it cost $0.00 to make yep that is right ZERO dollars FREE WOOHOO!! I had a plant stand that Shilo (big dog Akita she is naughty sometimes) broke the tile out of so I taped a glass plane (out of a picture frame) to the top and clipped my lamp under it and Voila a lightbox! It works great with stencils and any kind of paper. I love it!

I got a gorgeous set of bird gift tags from Anastasia yesterday in the mail. I had won them in a giveway. I can't believe how nice they are. You should visit her etsy site at www.percivalroad.etsy.com Believe me you will not be disappointed in whatever you purchase. Show some love and buy handmade.

Get a little bling cards

I worked on these mini (3x3) cards last night. I love the bling that the rhinstones give them. This is one of my newest stamps and I love it. I don't have very many stamps to choose from but did just add 3 new ones that came in the mail the other day. I will be making more sets of mini cards I like that size. I also pierced the corners of this set in a triangle pattern.

Well today is organizing day for me. This crate holds patterned paper, cardstock, and precut card blanks. Eventually I will spray paint them chocolate and add wood dividers. I have 2 or three more to hang today. I use hercules hooks and it works fine. I have a closet that has shelves that need cleaning and I need to unearth my tables. Lots to do yet today.
My walls in this room are going to be aqua in color and all my storage stuff will be chocolate and the bedding and curtains chocolate too (this used to be the office/spare bedroom now it is my room/craft room I have a bed in here but my other stuff is in my now guest room).

party invititations

So after doing my niece's card I decided to make some cupcake party invitations. I have listed them in my etsy shop. I think they tured out nice but they were a lot of work. The pattern had to be tweaked majorly as nothing lined up right at all. It was a major modification on every single card.

cupcake card

I did this card for my cutie pie niece Ivorie who graduated PreK yesterday. Yeah I know it is going to be late. But isn't it cute?

miss u card

I really like how this card turned out. I did end up cleaning the "i" up a bit as the map didn't cut quite right on the cricut. Of course that was after I took the pictures go figure.

Revised memo station

I thought this needed something more added to it. So after much trial, tribulation, frustration and errors this is what I came up with. Simple yet adds another element and fills in the blank space that was glaring at me. I don't like empty spaces. lol.
